Despite the endevours of regulators such as OfCom and of the telecom operators themselves, the cost of call charges to UK non geographic numbers such as 0844, 0871, 0845, 0800 and so forth remains a source of confusion to many consumers.
These guidelines to non geographic number costs are there to help you find out what the cost of a call might be, for any of the major number ranges. You can find a full list of call charge rates from BT here.
You should note that if you are calling from a mobile then 08 numbers most probably are not included in your call plan for free minutes and there may be a connection fee and they may cost more to call. Always look for a geographic 01 or 02 number alternative when calling from a mobile. You can find these on the Say No to 0870 site here.
0844 numbers are now one of the most popular number ranges around used by public services and businesses alike, and questions about the charges for 0844 numbers appear in incredibly high volumes.
The call cost for an 0844 number can vary between 1/2p and 5p per minute depending upon the entity dialled, the deal that they have with their operator and the deal that the operator has with the carrier. This is from a BT landline and calls from mobile numbers will be higher. It is possible to tell the cost to call a specific 0844 number by the 5th, 6th and 7th digits of the number, apparently, but we have not researched this any further.
0871 numbers cost up to 10 pence per minute to call from the BT landline and businesses using these numbers are often collecting a per minute revenue share of the call cost.
0845 numbers are classed as local rate numbers, but haven't actually been charged at a local rate since BT was opened up to competition and the cost of 01 and 02 numbers dropped considerably. From BT landlines expect to pay around 5 pence per minute, with costs of other telecoms varying.
With some BT call plans you get free calls to 0845 numbers up to a duration of 60 minutes.
03 Numbers are cheap numbers to call and should cost you the same as a call to a BT landline. They should also be included in mobile operators' call plans.
090 numbers are the most expensive numbers to call and charges vary. The maximum cost of a call to an 0900 number is 60p per minute up to a maximum of £5.00 whereas there is no ceiling on the cost to call an 0904 number.
0800 numbers are free to call from a BT landline although if calling from a mobile you should check your call plan to find out whether there are any charges such as a connection fee.
0808 and 0500 Charges
0500 and 0808 numbers are free to call from a BT landline although if calling from a mobile you should check your call plan to find out whether there are any charges such as a connection fee.
